DAY. 3 In the morning we leave for Palo. Here during World War II the American General Douglas MacArthur fulfilled his promise of "I SHALL RETURN". On this coast was a heavy sea battle with the Japanese fleet. Under heavy resistance the American and Filipino troops landed here on the beach. Because of the many casualties and wounded and the blood that was spilt here, the beach was called "Red Beach'' More than 30,000 americans and 60,.000 japanese soldiers lost their lives here. In memory of the landing of the troops many heads of states have placed items of remembrance to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice of so many. |
